Then we must deal with those who continually maim and cripple the lives and opportunities of people by supplying drugs to them. When a dealer is busted and charged, our penalties are simply not strong enough to set an example for others. A good lawyer, whom most dealers can afford, will be able to obtain a plea bargain, a term that has been the ruination of the judicial system in this country. The deterrent for dealing drugs should be death, and there should not be a 10-year ordeal to see it through. The appeals process should not be allowed to exceed two years before the state carries out the sentence. That is a deterrent. Judicial reform is long overdue in South Carolina and the nation.
