KUDOS

Kudos for your sensible editorial "Bravo to Cohen" (December 9th
issue), praising state senator Steve Cohen for his plans to introduce
a medical marijuana law in Tennessee.

Many readers may be unaware that this is the second go-around for
medical marijuana in Tennessee. The state, along with over 30 others,
passed laws in the 1970s and 1980s establishing controlled-substances
therapeutic research programs for patients suffering from glaucoma,
cancer chemotherapy, or radiology.

Tennessee's first medical marijuana bill was approved in April 1981
and sadly was repealed in 1992. Polling has shown that most Americans
support legal access to marijuana for those in medical need. It's time
to get past the fear, lies, and hysteria that are keeping this gentle
non-toxic therapy from patients with no other recourse.
