ANOTHER DRUG WAR DURING SCHOOL BREAK

A second round of the war against drugs will be launched to coincide
with the school summer holidays next month.

"Young people might fall prey to drug peddlers during their holidays.
The government will make sure this does not happen," Prime Minister
Thaksin Shinawatra said yesterday.

"The new round of drug suppression will cover Bangkok and major
cities," he said.

The Basic Education Commission has formed a task force - the Anti Drug
Centre - to keep illegal narcotics out of schools.

Commission secretary-general Khunying Kasama Varavarn said that
although the government had declared victory in the war on drugs in
December, school administrators would remain vigilant and implement
measures to prevent drug use.

"Teachers and administrators are expected to work closely with parents
and community leaders in order to fight drug trafficking in schools,"
she said.

The commission will organise a three-day workshop, starting tomorrow,
in Bangkok to disseminate guidelines on keeping illegal drugs out of
schools
