With full acknowledgment that the former cannot exist without the latter, the direct threat to our citizenry lies with the addict. As a former prosecutor and trial court judge, I know that most property crimes and many of our assaults and murders are committed by addicts. My compliments to U.S. Attorney Dunn Lampton for targeting drug users ("Drug users target of initiative," Feb. 25). This approach at the federal level is long overdue and should serve as a model for future drug enforcement. Our local law enforcement agencies and judges should fully cooperate. When the addicts are locked up, we will realize a dramatic reduction in other crimes. I applaud Mr. Lampton's wisdom in announcing his intentions publicly. Drug users and their families should be warned. The rules of engagement have changed! Addicts should seek help with their addiction. Families of addicts should immediately get their loved ones into rehab! Sure it's tough - but it beats jail!
