LAWMAKERS ASKED TO EXTEND HATE-CRIMES PROTECTION

In other action Monday, the judiciary committee voted 24-15 to 
decriminalize growing small amounts of marijuana for medical purposes by 
seriously ill people who have been certified by their doctors to use the 
drug. Supporters say the proposal will help reduce the suffering of 
seriously ill people, while avoiding the risk of violating federal law. 
Opponents say it sends the wrong message to youth about the drug and is a 
step toward full legalization.
