LOCAL MP INTRODUCES LEGISLATION TO FIGHT CRYSTAL METH LABS

Mayerthorpe Freelancer -- Member of Parliament for Yellowhead, Rob
Merrifield has introduced Private Members Bill C-528, An Act to amend
the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (substances used in the
production of methamphetamine). This legislation will provide the RCMP
with clearly enforceable legislation to control the chemicals
necessary for the production of crystal meth.

"The increase in the use of the drug methamphetamine (crystal meth)
has been a problem in communities throughout our area," said
Merrifield. "Methamphetamine use is increasing despite the best
community and police efforts to fight the spread of illegal meth labs."

"The problem has not been the will to fight back, but the lack of
resources and legal tools tough enough to prosecute those found
setting up illegal meth labs," said Merrifield. "Bill C-528 is a step
in the right direction to shut down these hazardous chemical
operations."

"Bill C-528 answers the call by the Alberta Association of Municipal
Districts and Counties which passed a motion last fall to implement
regulations that will strictly control and monitor the sale and
possession of large quantities of chemicals used in the production of
meth," said Merrifield.

"Bill C-528 will curb the distribution of chemicals used in the
production of crystal meth, bringing Canada in line with similar
legislation as the United States," said Merrifield.

"Communities are doing all they can to educate their residents about
the dangers of crystal meth, but we need to do more to reduce the
actual production and presence of drugs in our communities," concluded
Merrifield. For more information, please contact Rob Merrifield, M.P.
