RECORD AMOUNT OF DAGGA SEIZED

Police officers from the Drug Law Enforcement Unit and the Serious Crime
Unit set a new record on Sunday when they discovered the largest single
stash of cannabis to be seized in Namibia since Independence, Police
reported yesterday.

Three people were arrested on Sunday afternoon after Police officers
discovered 301 kg of dagga - valued at some N$903 000 - at a house in
Windhoek's Goreangab residential area, the unit commander of the Drug Law
Enforcement Unit, Detective Inspector Barry de Klerk, announced yesterday.
He said it was the biggest single quantity of dagga seized by the Police in
Namibia since Independence.

A Namibian couple - a man aged 58 and his girlfriend aged 43 - and a South
African woman (36) were arrested.

They are set to appear in court on a charge of dealing in cannabis this week.

De Klerk said the dagga was found in 12 hessian bags that just about filled
the house where the Police made their discovery.

The drugs were seized as a result of "ongoing operations" by the Drug Law
Enforcement Unit assisted by the Serious Crime Unit, De Klerk said.

The new post-Independence record for Namibia follows another record drug
seizure made at Hosea Kutako International Airport last month.

In that case, a 22-year-old Angolan woman was arrested on allegations that
a record quantity of some 21 kg of cocaine - valued at about N$9,45 million
- - was found hidden in her luggage after she landed at the airport on a
flight from South Africa.
