20 MORE EYED IN DURHAM COP PROBE

THE OPP investigation into allegations of criminal misconduct by members of
the Durham police drug squad has swelled to include 20 more officers. It's
believed up to 30 officers received notices of investigation previously.

Last week, 20 officers received notices they are being investigated in the
19-month drug probe.

"We don't know what criminality they are investigating (under the Police
Services Act)," said Tom Bell with the Durham Regional Police Association.
"A document was left with the chief of police and that started everything.

"It certainly seems like they are looking for some big fish."

The number of officers under the microscope is shocking, said Durham
Regional Chairman Roger Anderson.

"I don't mind things taking time if they are done properly, but since the
OPP are investigating it's best not to comment. I'm surprised by the number
(of officers being investigated)."

The probe has already resulted in charges against Det. Tom Andrews, a
former member of the drug squad. He has been charged with insubordination
and discreditable contact.

The OPP have refused to detail the allegations or how many officers are
being investigated.

There may be as many as 50 notices that have gone out, Bell said.

All of the officers involved are still on the job, although Anderson and
some others being investigated are no longer with the drug squad.
