AADAC HOLDS OPEN HOUSE

Drayton Valley Western Review -- Local residents had the chance to
learn all about the Drayton Valley area office of the Alberta Alcohol
and Drug Abuse Commission last Wednesday during the organization's
first-ever Christmas open house.

The all-day event was an opportunity for guests to learn about the
services that provincially-funded AADAC offers to Drayton Valley and
the surrounding area.

"We have lots of excellent resources and we just wanted to welcome
people in," said AADAC area supervisor Kevin Fisher. "People who are
aware of us use our resources."

AADAC, for example, can be a tool for dealing with local drug abuse
issues.

"A lot of people are troubled by the drug use going on in Drayton
Valley and AADAC provides information resources and counselling to aid
the community in dealing with this problem," said Fisher.

AADAC's services in Drayton Valley include information resources on
addictions as well as education and counselling. The information
resources include information about four core addictions: drugs,
alcohol, gambling and tobacco. The education component includes
occasional visits to schools, businesses, community events and more by
AADAC staff. The counselling services primarily consist of individual
and family counselling related to drugs, alcohol, gambling and
tobacco. Counseling sessions are available to either the person with
the addiction or those impacted by this individual's addiction, said
Fisher.

He said the open house went well.

"It's nice to see people come by," said Fisher, adding that people are
welcome to either call or visit the AADAC office any time of year
during business hours. An appointment is not required to visit the
office.

The Drayton Valley AADAC office is located on the main floor of the
Provincial Building at 5136-51 Ave. The office can be reached by phone
at 542-5669.
