CRIME STOPPERS HELPS RCMP MAKE DRUG BUSTS

Calls to Crime Stoppers helped remove about $1.4 million worth of drugs off
Central Alberta streets last year.

That's a whopping increase of $1.35 million over 2003, Const. Ralph Cervi of
city RCMP said on Monday.

Cervi said many more people called Crime Stoppers than ever before with a 30
per cent increase in tips and calls.

The program, staffed by volunteers, received 528 calls and tips, up from 375
in 2003.

The program awarded $7,200 in cash, compared with $5,075 the previous year.

A board of directors determines the amount of reward for each prosecution
after a charge is laid.

Cervi said several factors may account for the tip increase.

He said the RCMP street team unit, which was set up to investigate drug
trafficking and the various associated property crimes, was a major factor.

He said more people felt empowered to call in and report suspected illegal
drug activities in their neighbourhoods.

December and May were the most productive months for drug bust tips with
almost $600,000 worth of drugs seized in May and $716,000 seized in
December.

In total, Crime Stoppers accounted for $1.57 million in stolen property and
narcotics seized.

Total property recovered almost doubled the 2003 figure. It amounted to
$172,000, up from $90,500 the previous year. "We're seeing it used more and
more in Central Alberta," Cervi said.

He said in addition to people feeling the program is more viable, education
has had an impact.

He said cellphones allow people to call and report suspected drunk drivers,
stolen property, people driving with no insurance and erratic drivers.
