SLAIN MOUNTIES' RELATIVES DEMAND JUSTICE SYSTEM DEBATE

Calgary -- The families of four Mounties killed near Mayerthorpe,
Alta., in March are calling for a national debate on Canada's
criminal justice system, a fight they plan to take to Ottawa in the fall.

They already have the support of Alberta's solicitor general, who
said he will back their calls for a review of the national drug program.

"There needs to be a national debate on many of the issues that
surround the deaths of our boys," said an emotional Rev. Don
Schiemann, father of Peter Schiemann, one of the four Mounties killed
by James Roszko.

"If we walk away from this with no changes, then we will forget what
they died for. They died to maintain the right, and we dare not abandon that."

Constables Schiemann, 25, Brock Myrol, 29, Anthony (Tony) Gordon, 28,
and Leonide (Leo) Johnston, 34, were killed by Mr. Roszko, who
ambushed the four inside a Quonset hut on his farm.

The families made the announcement during the launch of a commerative
pin dedicated to the fallen Mounties.
