POLICE INVITE RESIDENTS TO JOIN IN NATIONAL NIGHT OUT

Halton Regional Police are urging residents to get out on Tuesday, Aug. 2.

It's National Night Out (NNO).

National Night Out is a unique crime/drug prevention event that involves 
citizens, police, community groups, businesses, neighbourhood organizations 
and politicians across Canada, in the U.S. and around the world.

Last year, some 32 million people across the globe took part in NNO.

The aim is to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate 
support for and participation in local anti-crime programs, strengthen 
police community partnerships and get the word out to criminals that 
neighbourhoods are organized and fighting back against crime in order to 
preserve their quality of life.

The traditional celebration of NNO includes the display of outdoor lights 
and front porch vigils.

Many communities celebrate NNO with a variety of activities including block 
parties, kids' games, bike decorating contests, cookouts, visits from local 
police, parades, flashlight walks, contests, and youth programs.

NNO is seen as a proven, fun way to promote neighbourhood spirit and 
police-community partnerships.

"It's not too late to gather your neighbours and make a statement to the 
criminals," said Halton Regional Police spokesperson Sgt. Jeff Corey.

"The citizens of Halton are prepared to fight for the quality of life we 
have, together," the sergeant added.

If a Neighbourhood Watch zone is planning an event contact the 
Neighbourhood Watch office at 905-825-4777, ext. 2324 and see if McGruff, 
Halton's crime-fighting dog can attend the party to add a little extra to 
the event.
