OFFICIALS SHOULD STAND UP FOR CANADA

Re: "U.S. naval narcs in Victoria," Aug. 5.

Victoria deputy police chief Bill Naughton states that American sailors are
"very good ambassadors for their country." If that is true, why is there
any need for the U.S. Naval Criminal Investigative Service to be present in
Victoria at all?

Also, this "collaboration" is precisely like the arrest of Marc Emery,
carried out on behalf of American DEA agents. What's the next step? Helping
U.S. Customs officers arrest the owners of local stores selling Cuban
cigars or hemp shirts to American tourists?

When will Canadian officials get on their hind legs to offer some
resistance to American intrusions into Canadian affairs?

Don White,

Victoria.
