Steel THE LAW IS THE LAW Dear Editor, I am shocked at the spinelessness of our Town Council in dealing with the marijuana initiative. As everybody knows, there is a state law pertaining to the possession and sale of marijuana. Whether the law is wise, correct or socially beneficial is a serious question. I, for one, think it is none of the foregoing. But, it is the law. Every marshal takes an oath to enforce the law as it is written. Town council members take an oath to uphold the law. Action by town council dictating laws to enforce, and which laws to ignore, violates town council's oath, and requires the marshals to violate theirs. That town council even entertained debate is pandering and a total subversion of the principles of government. Perhaps we will next get an initiative to ignore rape. And town council, seeking to be all things to all people, will entertain debate on that issue. If Mr. (Ernest) Eich and his little band of marijuana lovers would like to change the law, go to Denver and try to do so. I might even go with you. But for town council to even consider this nonsense is irresponsible, sets a poor example and is gutless. John H. Steel Telluride - --- MAP posted-by: Richard Lake
