COMPARISON IS LESS THAN ACCURATE

Re: Vic Toews' comments regarding Marc Emery's extradition (The News, Aug. 26).

He knows bloody well that it's extremely unlikely the Canadian government
will officially legalize the sale of marijuana seeds in the next few
months, so he offers a solution that he'll never be challenged to implement.

Perhaps even stronger evidence of Toews' moral position is his comparison
of Emery's situation to phone scam artists bilking Americans from phones in
Toronto. He asks, "Why should we grant these people protection?

Indeed, most would agree that we should not. However, Mr. Emery was not
bilking Americans with fraudulent schemes. He was providing his customers
with the product they ordered and delivering the full quantities his
customers paid for. In other words, Mr. Emery was engaging in honest
business transactions.

Comparing those transactions to lying, cheating, and stealing is, to say
the least, specious and devious.
