D.A.R.E. BENEFIT NOW IN ITS 14TH YEAR

Annual car show will take place at transit terminal

The Edwardsville Police Department is gearing up for the 14th annual
D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Benefit Car Show.

This year's event will be conducted at the Madison County Transit
Terminal, Sunday, Sept. 25, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The entry fee for cars is $10 and $8 for display only. Dash Plaques
will be given to the first 200 entries.

Sarah Yates, co-chair of the Car Show, said the event is more than a
car show.

"It's not just a car show," Yates said. "It's a family
event."

D.A.R.E. officer Chris Taylor also serves as this year's
co-chair.

Yates said she is very thankful to Dennis Technology for kicking off
donations for the car show on Aug. 23.

"They gave us $1,800," Yates said.

Dennis Technology decided to make a donation to D.A.R.E. because of
the positive impact the program has on students.

"We must show the positive outcomes of many successful choices, and
offer the professional organizations, such as D.A.R.E., the
opportunity to help young people choose the better path they are
searching for," representatives of Dennis Technology wrote in a
statement to D.A.R.E. "With all of us as examples of what can be
achieved by remaining with the community, and how much we mean to each
other as a community."

Yates said the D.A.R.E. car show committee is still accepting
donations from individuals and businesses.

Last year's car show was very successful.

"Last year we were able to raise $10,820," Yates said. "Our goal was
$10,000. This year our goal is $12,000. We make about $3,000 from
selling goods every year and close to $3,000 on raffle tickets.
Everything is donated and everything we make goes back to the kids."

This year there will be 36 different car classes for people to enter
there cars in. The Edwardsville YMCA will be handling games and
special events for children from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and there will also
be a flea market and craft booths located on Hillsboro.

This year's menu for "The Filling Station Diner,"located under the
terminals covered area, includes grilled turkey legs, turbo brats and
hot rod dogs.

Tickets for the raffle are $1 each or seven for $5.

Prizes include first prize -- $200 cash donated by Cassens & Sons, a
$300 value deluxe room for two/three days and two nights at the Resort

The Edwardsville Police Department currently has three certified
instructors in the D.A.R.E. curriculum now serving approximately 1,500
students per class year.

Beginning this year, D.A.R.E. will be taught in the fifth and seventh
grades.

The Edwardsville Police D.A.R.E. Program was established in the spring
of 1990.

The police department is responsible for the instruction of the
D.A.R.E. Program throughout the district and is the primary financial
support for the program.

Donations from private individuals, business, and civic organizations
are used for the promotional materials which enhance the program and
are given to students in the program throughout the year.

Since the establishment of the Edwardsville Police D.A.R.E. Program,
approximately 9,500 students have been instructed in the program's
fifth/sixth core curriculum.
