WE NEED FACTS ON MARIJUANA

Re: We need the truth about marijuana, Sept. 15.

For several years I've been wondering why extensive and exhaustive
scientific research has not been conducted to identify the full impact of
marijuana smoking on the human mind and body. This could end the debate
between those who laud the therapeutic benefits of marijuana, and those who
fear the negative impact of marijuana use, such as its possible
conduciveness to the use of heavier drugs.

To help clarify the issue, letter-writer L. S. Davidson proposes research
that would involve data collection in hospitals Canada-wide, targeting 15-
to 25-year-old smokers. In-depth data analysis could be conducted by a team
of pharmacologists, chemists, biologists and medical doctors who would
analyse the data from a purely scientific viewpoint and draw objective
findings.

The findings would offer a reliable base that would allow for objective
decision-making on the use, or prohibition, of marijuana. If some claim that
all such extensive, exhaustive research has already been completed, I ask:
Where are the findings? Why is the debate still alive? And what have
decision-makers done with the findings?

As far as we can see, decision-makers are still struggling with the
marijuana issue. Put this issue in the hands of scientists and let them draw
objective findings.
