TEENS HOSPITALIZED AFTER USING DEADLY JIMSON WEED

HAMILTON - Police are warning of the dangers of jimson weed after
four Stoney Creek teenagers were taken to hospital Wednesday night.

Police investigate a few cases each year where somebody ends up in
hospital from a jimson overdose, said Hamilton police Const. Jack Vanderpol.

The most common users are kids from 12 to 18 years old who consume
the plant for its hallucinogenic properties, Vanderpol said Thursday.

The plant is not illegal and is common in gardens.

Apart from ingesting the seeds, users may brew the leaves, stems and
seeds as tea, or smoke the dried foliage.

Apart from hallucinations and delirium, the plant can induce
potentially fatal symptoms, including a rapid pulse and even a heart attack.
