SLED INVESTIGATING SHOOTING BY OFFICER IN MB

State Law Enforcement Division agents are investigating a shooting
that occurred while a Myrtle Beach police officer was trying to
arrest one of three men involved in a suspected drug transaction.

Police said an unidentified officer from an unnamed agency shot at a
car Tuesday when its driver fled from officers trying to make a drug
arrest. No one was injured.

SLED agents are looking into the incident and will report their
findings to the 15th Circuit solicitor's office, SLED Inspector
Richard Hunton said.

Law-enforcement agencies generally restrict the use of deadly force
to situations where an officer or bystander is in danger, said Jeff
Rojek, an associate professor of criminology and criminal justice at
the University of South Carolina.

Officials at some Horry County police agencies said they have similar
restrictions.

Myrtle Beach police said the incident Tuesday occurred around
midnight on Acline Avenue, off 10th Avenue North between Robert M.
Grissom Parkway and Kings Highway.

The car was found abandoned soon after the shooting, and the driver
was arrested the next day.

Floyde Allen Barnett, 43, is charged with possession of crack cocaine
and resisting arrest, police said.

Carlton Ford was charged with distribution of crack cocaine. Police
said Ford and another man provided crack for Barnett. The other man
was not arrested Thursday.
