METHADONE IS AN EFFECTIVE MEDICAL INTERVENTION

I AM shocked by Annabel
Goldie's article against methadone maintenance treatment (MMT). She
seems unaware that MMT reduces the death rate in addicts at least
two-fold and probably eight-fold or even more. This makes it the most
effective medical intervention there is, after childhood
immunisations. She is correct that the prescription of methadone is
not a panacea and it should be combined with counselling and training
opportunities. I don't think anyone is disputing that. She suggests
that thousands should have their prescription of opiate replacement
therapy stopped and be "rehabilitated". Would that it were so easy.
Sadly, the effectiveness of detoxification and rehabilitation is low,
with most addicts relapsing quickly to illegal drugs.

After detox they lose their tolerance to opiates and so are at an
increased risk of death from overdose.

Indeed, studies show that detox, far from helping, actually increases
the death rate.

It would be alarming if such an ill-informed individual were ever to
attain a position of importance.
