DOGS FIND NO DRUGS IN SEARCHES AT CRAIG, PARKER

Drug-sniffing dogs searched Janesville's Craig High School this
morning as students and staff were locked in their classrooms, the
school district reported.

The dogs searched 400 lockers during first period and did not find
any drugs, district spokeswoman Sheryl Miller said.

Miller said the decision to search only part of the school of about
1,800 students was made by the Janesville Police Department, which
was in charge of the search, and the dog handlers.

The dogs and handlers came from police departments of  Beloit; Monroe;
Loves Park, Ill.; and the Green County Sheriff's Department, Miller
said. The search took about 35 minutes, and classes went on as usual,
Miller said.

Late-arriving students and visitors were taken to the school office
during the search, and students and staff had no contact with the
dogs, Miller said.

The school board authorized the searches last winter as a measure
designed to deter students from bringing drugs to school, which was
the cause of large numbers of expulsions.

This was the second search under the policy. The first search, in
May, also was at Craig. Original plans called for searches at all the
district's middle and high schools.

Authorities conducted a similar search at Parker High School late
this morning as well. They didn't find anything at Parker either,
Miller said.
