Abdullah, who launched the Karnival Enam Jahanam (Six Evils Carnival) anti-drug campaign last night, said the fact that there were a high number of youths involved in drugs was worrying. "Drugs are a big danger to our country. In 2004, there were 38,672 addicts, of which 28,052 were between the ages of 19 and 30 while another 1,255 were between 13 and 18. "They are an active group in society, who are supposed to be part of a strong workforce and the country's future leaders. Unfortunately, they are drugs addicts," he said before launching the campaign at Jalan Masjid India here, which was attended by more than 5,000 people including ministers. He said that of the 38,672 addicts, 19,810 were new addicts while 18,862 were repeat ones. The carnival is aimed at combating the six common drugs used by addicts -- heroin, cocaine, Ecstasy, cannabis, syabu and morphine -- hence the name Enam Jahanam. The campaign was organised by the Internal Security Ministry, National Anti-Drugs Agency and Umno's Drug Eradication Bureau. The private sector also chipped in with donations. Abdullah, who is also Internal Security Minister, said that not only were the addicts' lives destroyed but their loved ones also suffered, as drug traffickers continue to reap profits. "It's heartbreaking that this is happening especially to the young ones. The suffering is at least five times more when you take into account the immediate family and even more, if you include the extended family. "Please stay away from drugs -- love yourself and value your lives," he urged Malaysians. - --- MAP posted-by: Jay Bergstrom
