This "us four and no more" attitude reflects the materialistic climate of our society. Property values are more important than the wounded lives of people. These same people cry "crocodile tears" over the increase of drug addiction in our schools and community, declaring that "something should be done about it" as long as it isn't in "my quiet neighbourhood." I am not affiliated in any way with Teen Challenge, but I am familiar with their work. Teen Challenge is an International organization, one of the largest kind in the world. It was established in 1958 and has grown to more than 120 treatment centres in the US and 175 centres in 62 countries. Not some "fly by night" backwoods group. A three year study completed in 1999 shows that their rehabilitation rate is higher than any other program of its kind. The typical addicted teen entering the program is devoid of family ties =AD nearly all supportive relationships shattered. No social network. Teen Challenge offers them the family atmosphere of love, caring and commitment. They help the students to gain new social skills to that upon leaving the program they can be gainfully employed. Teen Challenge has a good rehab. program. We should welcome them and help them to get established in our community to give those less fortunate who are struggling with addiction, a hope and a future. I for one wouldn't care if an alien came from Mars to help my son or daughter if they could. By the way, I live in this neighbourhood.
