Beck said the school frequently discusses the use of drugs with the students and the Grade 5 classes are active with the D.A.R.E program. He also stated that he feels Barriere has no more problems than other communities do regarding drug addiction. "Our kids are really good kids here at the school, " said Beck, " They are aware of the drug problem with kids and know that there are also adults doing drugs in the community." Beck stated that the D.A.R.E program has proven to be very effective but is only a one-shot deal. He said the elementary schools are now planning to instigate a Grade 4 to Grade 7 eight week program on drug prevention that will continue over a progression of years. "We need to continue to make kids aware and to know if they are being pressured, " said Beck, "We have to teach them to make the right choices." Beck said that his instinct in regards to the Elementary School and the Annex is that "we do not have a problem with drugs." However, he stated that the Grade 7 students are reaching an age that fitting in and peer pressure could create a problem. How does the elementary school handle the possibility of a drug dealer approaching students at the school? "We are very, very vigilant," said Beck, "The supervisors and staff are really close to these kids and react accordingly." - --- MAP posted-by: Derek
