WHY PAY POLICE OFFICER DURING SUSPENSION?

Re: York cop, spouse face drug charges, March 17.

It seems there is an assumption of guilt on the part of York Regional
Police regarding the accused officer.

The officers' quotes suggest the force wants to distance itself from
Const. Nadine Morcos. I find it troubling that, if there was enough
evidence to charge the husband, as well as the officer, why does she
deserve to be paid during her suspension?

If a civil servant is paid to serve the public, but is prohibited from
service due to suspension, why would she be paid for not serving the
public?

If a citizen is charged criminally, whether found guilty or innocent,
the judicial process often leads to a loss of employment, home,
business or vehicle.

It seems unfair a police officer who stands accused of a criminal
offence should continue to be paid while suspended.

I feel police ought to be subject to the same treatment as any member
of society under the same circumstances.

If this is policy -- and it always seems to be the case in police
arrests reported by the media-- then I challenge that policy as
unreasonable.

Second, I would feel more comfortable with the findings of an outside
investigative body.

I think if a public breach is alleged by local police, then it should
be investigated by the OPP. I believe an outside investigation would
be in the public's best interest, as well as the interest of the
officer charged.

I think that would better maintain public confidence.
