DRUGS: JUST SAYING NO IS NOT ENOUGH

Dear Editor,

It is natural for human beings to satisfy individual desires and rebel 
against obstacles in the way. We can create all the laws we want, and as 
long as we use money as a medium of exchange, crime and violence will 
continue to escalate.

We are already deluged with laws that were created to solve problems, so 
much so that our jails and prisons are over-loaded to where the authorities 
release criminals before their terms are up, and/or force our judges to 
hand out minimal jail sentences to relieve the pressure.

As for the suggestion that we unite "in one voice and agree that the war on 
drugs can be won" [War on drugs starts in community, April 26 Letters to 
the Editor, Langley Advance News] one need only look at the history of this 
province to realize how futile such an endeavor would be.

We can't even get 50 per cent of the population to unite at election time. 
Just saying "no to drugs" is not going to cut it in the 21st Century. It 
just ain't gonna happen!
