CANINE UNIT LEADS CRACKDOWN ON DRUG USE

Come September, It Will Be A Lot Harder For Abbotsford Students To Take
Drugs To School.

The Abbotsford school board recently amended its controversial drug policy
to permit drug dogs to sniff through school parking lots for drug-carrying
cars.

Uultsje DeJong, the trustee who tendered the motion, said the school can't
force students to open their cars, but that parking passes will be taken
away for non-compliance. The board does not intend to charge students found
with drugs, DeJong added.

A private company has been hired to conduct random searches of lockers and
parking lots.

Micheal Vonn, B.C. Civil Liberties Association policy director, said her
group is concerned. "We support safety, but we don't think other options
have been considered."
