High Point police will present the initiative at the 29th annual Law Enforcement Management Training Conference and Exposition. That puts the department among a pool of 30 public agencies chosen to deliver presentations, according to Dave Mulholland, a spokesman for the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the organizer. Twice that number applied to participate, he estimated. "We're very selective about the workshops we do, so to make it into the conference as a presenter, I would say is pretty prestigious," Mulholland said Monday night. The event opens today at the Sheraton Four Seasons Greensboro Convention Center and concludes Friday. High Point police Maj. Marty Sumner and crime analyst Lee Hunt are scheduled to speak on behalf of the department at 4 p.m. Wednesday. They will show how the department joined technology, policing and community involvement to cut violent crime and drug crime in West End by nearly 40 percent. The presentation also will touch on successes reported by residents in the Daniel Brooks Homes area, where the same effort began April 5. "It shows that it wasn't just a magic bullet in that part of town (West End) and it can be duplicated," Sumner said. Greensboro police Chief David Wray will be among the speakers at opening ceremonies, set to begin today. Among the highlights will be a panel discussion on information sharing strategies with senior officials from the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Department of Justice, officials said. - --- MAP posted-by: Josh
