SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL RECOVERY MONTH

This September is the 17th annual National Alcohol and Drug Addiction
Recovery Month.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration Web site,
the purpose of recovery month is to help communities recognize
strides made in treatment, educate the public that substance use
disorders are a treatable public health problem that affect everyone
and to encourage community support for those in need of treatment and
in recovery.

The Cook Inlet Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse is sponsoring a
poster contest in recognition of recovery month. The theme for this
year is "Join the Voices for Recovery," and the contest is open to
three categories, age 5-12, 13-18 and adult. Posters may be any
medium and can be turned in at the Homer Bookstore or Safeway until
Sept. 30. Entries should include name, age, address and telephone
number. Prizes will be listed on the collection boxes.

For more information about the contest, or to find out about
community resources for substance abuse, contact the Cook Inlet
Counsel on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, 235-8001.

For mental health services, contact Homer Community Mental Health
Center, 235-7701.
