ALLEGED GOSHEN SHOOTER HAS MEDICAL MARIJUANA CARD

A man accused of fatally shooting a woman while defending his
marijuana growing operation from burglars holds a medical marijuana
card and his crop was within legal parameters, Lane County authorities said.

There is no evidence that Alan Smith, 45, of Goshen was selling
marijuana for profit, said Sgt. Clint Riley of the Lane County
Sheriff's Office.

Smith remained in the Lane County Jail on Tuesday on a charge of
intentional murder. Investigators said he shot Debra Lynn Contreras,
48, of Eugene on Friday as she tried to flee in a pickup after what
authorities believe was a botched attempt to steal drugs and money from Smith.

Detectives think Contreras was serving as a getaway driver for James
Stover Jr., 41, and Travis Krauss, 24. Smith, armed with a shotgun,
allegedly fired on Contreras as she tried to drive away. The pickup
struck a mailbox and ended up in a ditch.

Stover and Krauss, who also uses the name Classen, remained in jail
Tuesday on charges of conspiracy to commit robbery and first-degree burglary.
