DRUG-SNIFFING DOGS HELP NAB STUDENT

A Granite Bay High School student was arrested today on suspicion of
possessing about one-fourth an ounce of marijuana in a car on campus,
authorities said.

The marijuana was found during a parking lot search by 10 Placer
County Sheriff's Department deputies and six drug-sniffing dogs.
Though the dogs alerted officials to about five cars, only one
produced any drugs, said Sgt. John Weaver, supervisor of juvenile and
community services for the department.

The search was conducted as part of an effort by the department to
keep drugs off school campuses. With school administration's
cooperation, deputies plan to visit a few high schools each year.
They began at the end of last year with Del Oro High School, but
Weaver declined to say what other schools would be visited this
year. Campuses within the department's jurisdiction include Granite
Bay, Del Oro, Colfax, Foresthill, Chana and North Tahoe high schools.

The Granite Bay High student was suspended for five days, per
district policy, said Principal Ron Severson.
