CRIMESTOPPERS CALLS LEAD TO 200 ARRESTS

CALLS to Crimestoppers have resulted in 200 arrests and the recovery
of drugs valued at over UKP450,000 in South Yorkshire so far this
year, the charity has said. Stolen property totalling UKP120,000 has
also been recovered by local police as a direct result of information
given to operators of the free phone line, which allows callers to
remain anonymous.

Regional coordinator Ian Froggett said "The results in South
Yorkshire are absol-utely tremendous and are some of the best in the country.

"Anonymous South Yorkshire callers have provided 1,450 pieces of
information which we've sent on to the police for development and
action. The police have worked on this information and have arrested
and charged 200 people. The recoveries of stolen property and volume
of drugs taken out of the supply chain have also been exceptionally high."

Det Supt Matt Jukes said: "Arrests from Crimestoppers in South
Yorkshire have trebled over three years. That has happened in part
because we have succeeded in raising the profile of our appeals by
using newspapers, television, targeted campaigns and the
Crimestoppers Most Wanted website.

"It has also happened because we are ready to respond quickly to the
information as it comes in, but most of all it has happened because
people in South Yorkshire don't tolerate drug dealing and other crime
in their communities and have been calling us in their hund-reds with
vital information.

"We owe every caller a debt of thanks. Every call is helping make our
neighbourhoods safer."

Anyone with information on criminal activity should call
Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
