DUATHLETES TO BE HONOURED

A pair of Manitoba triathletes will be honoured when Triathlon Canada
hands out its 2005 awards in June.

Erin Braun will pick up the Under-23 Female Duathlete of the Year
award while Blair Peters has been named Junior Male Duathlete of the
Year, it was announced by Triathlon Canada. The awards will be
presented during the Canadian Triathlon Championships, June 30 in
Brampton, Ont.

TACKLING DRUGS: The Sport Medicine Council of Manitoba in partnership
with Sport Manitoba, Coaching Manitoba and the Canadian Sport Centre
Manitoba will be holding the first provincial Drug Education Training
Workshop for athlete support personnel, tomorrow at noon at Room 136
at the University of Manitoba Frank Kennedy Centre.

At the national level, 80% of the positive drug tests for banned
substances are for marijuana. Binge drinking by athletes is still a
problem. The four-hour workshop will provide a strategy to address
all substances that athletes use or misuse.

More than 80 athlete support personnel including therapists, coaches
and strength trainers who work directly with provincial athletes will
attend. The main focus of the workshop will be education on a
comprehensive approach for making decisions to take or avoid banned
and illegal drugs.

BADMINTON PROVINCIALS: David Harrison and Jennifer Linley of the
Winnipeg Winter Club are the top male and female seeds when Badminton
Manitoba holds the Manitoba Provincial Badminton Championships, this
weekend at the Winter Club.

Play begin today at 5 p.m., and continues tomorrow at 8 a.m. The
finals are 11:30 a.m., on Sunday.

MAKE A SPLASH: Canada's Junior Women's National Water Polo Team
placed third at France's International Tournament in Nancy, France,
last weekend. The Canadian squad, which included Winnipeg Bushido
goalie Serena Bredin, began the four-team tournament with two losses
and finished off with an 11-8 victory over Ukraine Senior National Team.

The team is preparing for this summer's Pan American Championships in
Montreal, which will serve as the qualification event for the 2007
FINA Junior World Championships. The junior national team will train
in Montreal prior to the Pan Am Championships.
