REHEARSAL TO MARK ANTI-DRUG ABUSE DAY

The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) held a rehearsal yesterday for
tomorrow's ceremony to celebrate International Day against Drugs
Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in the capital.

Deputy Minister at the Prime Minister's Department Dato Paduka Awang
Haji Eussoff Agaki Haji Ismail will deliver a speech and launch the ceremony.

Drugs commonly abused by addicts here will also be destroyed after the launch.

The celebration aims to create awareness and to educate the public,
especially the youth, on the dangers of the abuse, misuse and illegal
trade in drugs.

NCB Director Awang Haji Abdul Majid bin Manggarshah and officers of
the bureau witnessed yesterday's rehearsal.

Some 150 students from Sekolah Rendah Mabohai, Sekolah Rendah Raja
Isteri Fatimah and St Georges School are involved in the anti-drug
dance performances.

The choir group of St Georges School will sing anti-drug songs.

Anti-drugs activities by schools and government departments will also
be displayed in specially constructed booths at the open area of the
Yayasan Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah in the capital.

Participating government agencies include NCB, Prisons, Community
Development, Royal Brunei Police Force, and Royal Customs and Excise.

Anti-drug Action Body or A-Team from Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan
Science College, Sayyidina Hassan Secondary School, Sayyidina Husain
Secondary School, Sayyidina Abu Bakar Secondary School, Raja Isteri
Pengiran Anak Damit Arabic Religious Secondary School, Raja Isteri
Girls High School, and Berakas Secondary School will also join the exhibition.

In the afternoon, stage activities will be held.

Band performances from Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien College, Paduka
Seri Begawan Sultan Science College and Berakas Secondary School can
be witnessed.

Educational activities on drugs eradication such as Roda Impian,
Lontar dan Menang, Quiz and Mewarna Ria will take place.

In 1987, the UN General Assembly decided to observe June 26 as the
International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking as an
expression of its determination to strengthen action and cooperation
to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse.
