ND'S HANDBOOK SPELLS OUT PENALTIES

The Notre Dame student handbook, duLac, details penalties for
student misconduct, including illegal drug use.

"Possession, use or misuse of any controlled substance, including,
but not limited to, marijuana, cocaine, heroin, amphetamines and
depressants, is a serious violation. Students who possess, use or
misuse such substances shall be subject to disciplinary suspension
or permanent dismissal," the handbook states.

Disciplinary suspension means separation from the university for at
least one semester. The student is eligible to apply for
readmission, but it is not automatic.

Regarding underage drinking, duLac states students "may be subject
to disciplinary action for underage consumption, possession or
transportation of alcoholic beverages."

Federal law requires every college or university to publish an
annual report of campus crime statistics.

Nine drug law violations at Notre Dame were reported for
disciplinary action during 2005, the most recent year for which a
report is available. In comparison, 293 liquor law violations were
referred for disciplinary action in 2005.

In 2004, there were seven drug law violations referred for
disciplinary action and 183 for liquor law violations; and in 2003,
two drug law violations and 105 liquor law violations.

Notre Dame administrators this week refused to discuss the
statistics or speak in general terms about what penalties are issued
to students cited.
