CANADA NO PLACE FOR U.S. AGENTS

To the editor:

Re: "The quiet Americans," Feb. 16.

U.S. law enforcement operating on Canadian soil is nothing new. While
on a trip to Europe a few years back that included a stopover in
Montreal, I was surprised to see Broward County (Florida) Sheriffs
patrolling the baggage claim area with the help of sniffer dogs!

Obviously they were looking for signs of drugs, but why they would
suspect travellers from Europe-not exactly a drug trade haven-I have
yet to figure out. But I suppose they know what they are doing, which
just like the U.S. agents operating in B.C. is all about exporting the
U.S. "zero-tolerance" drug policy to Canada.

Knowing that their draconian approach to drug law would never wash
politically in Canada, doing it covertly is the only avenue left for
them. The real question is, why are Canadian agencies like the RCMP
and the Vancouver police cooperating?
