Barriere RCMP Constable Caroline Duval has been working with the Barriere Elementary School grade 5's for the last 10 weeks, teaching them about the different types of drugs, and how to deal with situations in which they are involved. Through a series of skits, the children learn how to recognize a bad situation, react, and then be assessed on how they handled themselves. In a world that seems to be battling with substance abuse, it is good to see that the school district and RCMP are doing an excellent job making sure kids are properly informed. "We want to make sure these kids grow up to make proper and educated choices," said RCMP Cpl. Mike Mucha, "This program is the beginning." On June 18 the grade 5 Barriere Elementary School (BES) class graduated from the DARE program in a ceremony held at the School. Barriere RCMP Cpl. Mucha and Cst. Duval recognized each student who completed the program and presented them with a graduation certificate and DARE t-shirt. The DARE program receives a large portion of its funding from the annual 911 Golf Tournament held at Chinook Cove Golf. This year's 911 tournament will be held on Aug. 19th. Half of the proceeds raised during the tournament this year will go towards the DARE program, and the other half of the money raised will be donated towards the new rescue truck for Barriere Search and Rescue. Both are excellent causes, and everyone is urged to grab their clubs, and head out to the greens for a day of sunshine and fun that supports the community. - --- MAP posted-by: Beth Wehrman
