DEALING WITH NEEDLES

Editor - It is easy to criticize a small underfunded nonprofit needle
exchange program for the problem of discarded syringes in Golden Gate
Park. It is more difficult to focus on the larger systemic problems
that beset drug users, the mentally ill and the homeless.

Accountability lies with local, state and federal governments that
prioritize prisons over housing and education, and war over universal
health care. Homeless Youth Alliance is one of the very few programs
that has meaningful relationships with the homeless in the park. Maybe
they should receive an increase in funding so that they can provide a
safe injection facility for drug injectors. That would make the park
safer and users healthier.
