There were 26 tips from the community over the past year, resulting in four arrests, two cases cleared and seven charges laid. In addition, because of the tips received, police seized more than $171,000 worth of drugs in the community in 2007. The tips and the resulting action are proof the Crime Stoppers program is working. Those who have tips about a crime are able to report them anonymously. Cash rewards are given for tips leading to the arrest of a suspect. People are using the service and as a result, police are receiving information they need. At the same time, we wonder if more people in the community have information they could give Crime Stoppers. The value of drugs seized in Summerland may appear high, but it does not reflect the entire illegal drug activity in the community. Police have taken down marijuana grow operations and have arrested dealers of marijuana and other illegal drugs, but despite these efforts, there is still drug trafficking and drug production in Summerland and beyond. Our police detachment is making an effort to address drug abuse and substance abuse issues. In order to enforce drug laws - and in order to combat other criminal activity - the police need the help and support of the community. Crime Stoppers is asking for funding to hire a full-time coordinator. This would help publicize and promote this program and could result in more tips about unsolved crimes. In addition, we urge the public to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) to provide information on crimes. - --- MAP posted-by: Richard Lake
