POT LAWS HYPOCRITICAL Paul Berton makes a strong point that Marc Emery will spend more time in jail than many violent offenders ("Americans are dopes on pot," Point of View, Jan. 16). Emery himself points out his "crime" has no victims and no one claiming to be a victim. Governments in Canada and the U.S. take the hypocritical stand of allowing alcohol and tobacco to be sold legally. Both substances are proven killers with millions of victims among the users and people around them. As for getting rid of pot, Americans (and to a lesser degree Canadians) simply need to look at recent history. Alcohol prohibition failed and so too will the war on drugs. Legalize and control marijuana. Win the war, save the money and maybe save the only victims of this drug -- the people in the gangs and crime scene that surround it today. But that may just make too much sense. Tim Scott Barrie (Keep it mellow, dude) - --- MAP posted-by: Jay Bergstrom
