Branch 17 will have handbooks distributed to Grade 5 students by Const. Pierre Vezina of the Courtenay RCMP, the RCMP having already committed to drug education programs in the Courtenay schools. Each student will be presented with a copy of the 144-page handbook, Drug Safety, which is produced by Gateway Community Safety Net. The book is widely used to educate and increase awareness of substance abuse. In addition to educating youth, the materials are also a valuable family resource. Children learn effective strategies to resist peer pressure tactics, while parents receive tips to help keep their kids stay drug-free. Important resource contacts and information are contained inside as well. Also included is an educational DVD that features animated characters, interactive games and quizzes. It connects to the Community Safety Net website, where kids can enter online contests and win prizes. The materials have been provided thanks to the support of local businesses and organizations. People interested in obtaining copies of these handbooks can do so at the Courtenay Legion (367 Cliffe Ave.) after noon, Monday to Sunday.
