THE TRUTH ABOUT GUNS

I would like to respond to the Gainesville Sun's July 1 editorial, the
commentary by Arthur Kellermann and the editorial cartoon of the same
day.

First, firearms are used in self defense one million times a year by
law abiding citizens. Clumping gun crimes with self defense is common
to push a warped agenda of gun control.

The U.S. supreme court has finally put to rest the truth of the
meaning of the 2nd amendment. The Bill of Rights were made due to
individual rights not being strong enough in our U.S. Constitution.
Plain and simple, law abiding citizens can protect themselves with
firearms.

Despite what most people think, most law enforcement officers do
support law-abiding citizens having firearms. Law enforcement officers
know they cannot protect people at all times and it appears the courts
have decided they are really not obligated to protect the individual
citizen.

People who do not understand why anyone would need a firearm probably
never had to defend themselves with their hands or a firearm.

I have done both. I have never had to take a life, but I am a power
lifter and have been trained in martial arts and boxing. Elderly
people or females can defend themselves against much bigger attackers
with a firearm. Despite what liberals say, these incidents do occur.
Alarm systems and dogs can be and have been eliminated.

Crime in many areas of the country has become worse due to illegal
drugs. Ask any law enforcement officer what they find with illegal
drugs; Illegal guns. I would suggest these armchair quarterbacks try
and live in the real world for a day instead of sitting behind a desk
or hiding in a university. Maybe then they would see what the real
world is about!
