POLICE RAIDS CUT OFF USERS' DRUG SUPPLY

Ottawa police raided several crack houses in the ByWard Market
yesterday, sweeping up dozens of suspected drug dealers.

Two dozen officers from the street crime unit and downtown patrol,
armed with a list of suspected street-level traffickers, stormed
through areas of the Market known for drug activity.

The sweep, dubbed Project Angler, resulted in the arrest of 64 adults
and one young offender who now face a total of 232 charges. Thirteen
of those arrested are female.

Since the operation cut off much of the immediate area supply, police
Chief Vern White warned that addicts may try to get drugs from
alternative sources.

"In the coming days, local pharmacies and clinics may see an increase
in patients seeking narcotics as many people who are dealing with drug
addiction cannot access drugs through their regular sources," Chief
White said in a release.
