FEDS TAKE STEP TO STOP DRUG USE

The federal government yesterday committed $1 million for United Way
youth drug treatment programs in Ottawa.

Nepean-Carleton Conservative MP Pierre Poilievre made the
announcement at Ottawa police headquarters on Elgin St. The money
will be doled out over four years and will support Project STEP,
which stands for support, treatment, education and prevention.

"This program helps the provinces and territories offer drug
treatment services for at-risk youth and supports work to strengthen
the quality of existing services," Poilievre said while making the
announcement on behalf of federal Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq.

RAISING MONEY

Poilievre was joined by Mayor Larry O'Brien, Ottawa United Way CEO
Michael Allen and police Chief Vern White, who has been raising money
for new drug treatment programs in the city.

The funding is part of the federal government's national anti-drug strategy.

White said the funding will help make a "significant impact" on
youths and their families.

About 8,800 students in Ottawa report symptoms of problematic drug
use, White said.

The money will allow officials to make early interventions before
users need treatment, he said.

"It's a good day for the future of our community," White said. "I'm
optimistic that real change will come from the investment that's
going to be made today."
