HARM REDUCTION

I'd like to congratulate The Province for its thoughtful review of its
position regarding the legalization of drugs and the extensive
coverage given to life and community in the Downtown Eastside. So
often the media spotlight can be harsh and glaring. These breadth of
stories, people, and opinions in your series on the Downtown Eastside
have been revealing, powerful and challenging.

The debate to end prohibition of drugs is much more advanced in
Vancouver than anywhere else in Canada. The stark consequences on the
failed war on drugs are all around us. I very much agree -- it's time
for Ottawa to "seriously consider new ideas." Unfortunately the Harper
government is buried in an ill-thought-out "anti-drug strategy" that
doesn't even include harm reduction.

It's time for the Conservatives to drop their ideological stance and
listen to the real experts in the community.
