DEAD MAN, DEPUTIES IDENTIFIED IN FATAL SHOOTING

Police: Deceased Was Armed, Threatening Deputies With Firearm; 
80-Year Old Woman Released On Her Own Recognizance Following 
Arraignment On Drug Charges

MULINO, Ore. - The identity of the man shot and killed by deputies as 
they served arrest warrants in connection with an alleged marijuana 
growing operation has been released, the involved deputies named, and 
the 80-year old woman who was arrested has been released on her own 
recognizance.

According to a news release prepared by the Clackamas County 
Sheriff's Office, the deceased was 68-year old Hubert Henkel. Henkel 
was the long-time companion of Marjorie Crawford, 80, and on March 4 
about 10:30 p.m. deputies went to 13262 S. Macksburg Road in Mulino 
to arrest the couple on warrants received March 2 for manufacturing, 
delivery and possession of a controlled substance (marijuana).

Two deputies, Brian Lister and Jesse Ashby, reportedly identified 
themselves and were confronted at the door by Henkel, non-compliant, 
armed and pointing his firearm "in a threatening fashion directly at 
each of the two deputies". Without specifically saying that one or 
both of the deputies fired, the news release stated that Henkel was 
fatally shot and died at the scene.

Crawford experienced medical issues unrelated to the incident and was 
taken from the scene by ambulance. She was arrested for 
manufacturing, delivery and possession of marijuana and was lodged in 
the Clackamas County Jail. Crawford was arraigned on Thursday and 
released on her own recognizance, the sheriff's office stated. She is 
due back in court on April 6.

Lister and Ashby were placed on administrative leave following the 
incident, as is departmental policy. Both deputies have been with the 
department since January 2007.

Deputy Lister was with the Molalla Police Department dating back to 
December 1998, and was with the Seaside Police Department between May 
2003 and January 2007.

Deputy Ashby was a reserve officer with the West Linn Police 
Department from October 2001 and July 2003, then moved into a 
full-time officer position where he served until January 2007.

At the conclusion of this investigation -- conducted by the Clackamas 
County Major Crimes Team with interagency participation -- this 
completed investigation will be submitted to the Clackamas County 
District Attorney's Office for consideration of an independent Grand 
Jury review," the sheriff's public information officer stated.
