METHADONE CLINIC'S LIFE EXTENDED

City officials have extended the life of a methadone clinic following
an appeal that stated immediate closure could flood emergency rooms
with drug addicts.

The Subdivision and Development Appeal Board gave operators of Second
Chance Recovery three months to find a new location or the city will
shut the facility down for good.

The clinic moved almost four months ago from its downtown location to
41 St. N.E. area, a site zoned for industrial use and not medical.

Some area residents complained to the city when they found out about
the clinic that treats addicts.

An immediate closure of the facility that caters to about 500 clients
was ordered but operators appealed it yesterday.

Part of the conditions of the extension is that the clinic has to
submit a development permit for the new site within a month.
