POLICE HAVE ACCOMPLISHED NOTHING

RE: "Spring drug sweep," April 2: "Have we made some sort of impact?"
Staff Sgt. Greg Preston said. "I like to think we have." This would be
laughable if it were not tragically naive. There is no better way to
subsidize drug dealers than to put a bunch of their competitors in
jail; no better way to increase the profit margin for drug dealers
than to take a fraction of the drugs off the street. Guess who is
happiest about these busts? The 95% of dealers they will never catch.
What the police have done is similar to removing a glass of water from
an Olympic-sized pool. They have accomplished nothing and know it.

(True. It's a futile waste of time to try to get rid of drugs.)
