NO HELP FOR METHADONE CLINIC

Even if the space is licensed for medical use, if landlords don't want
to rent to the Second Chance Recovery methadone clinic there's nothing
the city can do to force them, one alderman says.

"I advocate this going in my ward, or any other ward where the land
use is in place and the planning rules are approved," said Ward 4 Ald.
Bob Hawkesworth.

"The city is not a landlord, this is between private individuals and
companies, there's only so much we can do as a city."

Second Chance officials have said they will close the clinic when the
current lease runs out in just over two months, leaving 500 clients
without access to methadone until the program can be taken over by the
province.

The problem, said Dr. Ian Postnikoff, is that the current space in an
industrial park isn't zoned for medical use and every landlord with
properly zoned space they've approached has balked.

Hawkesworth said the city is treating Second Chance no different than
any other business.
