ASK HEALTH EXPERTS, NOT THE POLICE

Re: Safe Crack Houses Urged, Oct. 20.

Harm reduction is a scientifically sound process that helps drug
addicts slowly get off drugs. Nicotine patches, for example, are a
harm reduction method for cigarette addicts; the nicotine patch is
safer and "healthier" for the user than cigarettes.

But why was the president of the Ontario Police Association asked for
comment about this health issue? Would it not make more sense to hear
from health care experts, or even Health Canada?

Scientific evidence and public opinion are both in favour of harm
reduction. The only opponents are the Conservative government and
police. Why are police associations allowed to lobby for or against
public health initiatives -- or any legislation at all, for that matter?
